In September 2006, thanks to the generosity of the Montreal business community, Sun Youth created a crime victim fund dedicated to help victims of violent crime. The fund operates in addition to government programs that provide financial assistance to victims and their families.
After a financial evaluation, a person registered in the program may be compensated for the following expenses: monthly rent, electricity, heating, medication, and bus pass. Sun Youth also allows victims to use the services of its food bank as well as to receive free clothing and hygiene products. Sun Youth also helps victims rendered homeless to quickly find temporary housing.
To benefit from this program, victims of crimes must systematically be referred either by a police service or by a CLSC, hospital, IVAC or CAVAC. All victims who have suffered a violent crime or fraud in the province of Quebec are eligible to receive Sun Youth's support following a financial assessment.
