Sports
And Recreation
Since
the founding of Sun Youth, the organization, is committed to the
development and expansion of its sports and recreation programs.
The overall goal of the sports and recreation program is to provide
adolescents with a safe and supervised alternative to city streets
and shopping centres through participation in sports. We adhere
to the philosophy of a healthy mind in a healthy body, and promote
this through a ‘pass to play’ philosophy.
The
recreation center functions similarly to a drop in centre. The hours
are Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 9:00p.m. The centre offers numerous
activities for youngster to the age of eighteen and caters to a
variety of interests. A study lounge and computer centre provide
a quiet place to do homework and tutors are on hand for assistance.
College and University
students
visit the lounge three to four times a week, to tutor students with
difficulties in their school subjects. In addition the centre furnishes
a teen lounge complete with a TV, movies, video games, pool tables
and many other activities. Children and adolescents are invited
to visit the center.
The
sports program offers a variety amateur sports for ages 6 to 18
in most categories. All teams go under the name Sun Youth Hornets
and sport a feisty hornet logo on their jerseys, symbolizing grace,
the team’s powerful sting and love for the sport. Activities normally
take place after school hours and on weekends. All the necessary
equipment may be provided by Sun Youth with the exception of personal
items such as running shoes, skates, etc.
Team
sports include ringuette, football, basketball, and hockey where
teams compete in district, city, and provincial categories. In addition,
a weight room is available to those between 13-17 years of age.
Fully supervised, this facility encourages physical conditioning
and personal discipline. Membership fees depend on the sport, and
as always, fees can be determined on a sliding fee scale.
